: I am looking to become an agent in the near future (have life/health and prop/casualty licenses), but currently work in an agent staff sales/service position for a large carrier. I was looking for advice on whether to become an independent or captive agent, and what some effective strategies for an agent would be. One thing I would hope to have is a better policy-tracking environment... the one we have is functional, but somewhat hodge-podge. Anyway, thanks in advance.
In my opinion you should look to represent an independent marketing organization which has agreements with a number of Life Insurance providers, agreements with a number of Insurance providers for fixed, indexed and variable annuities, and a company that has a relationship with a quality Broker/Dealer for your securities and investment business.
In this type of environment you would have the support of a group that has already negotiated contracts with some of the top providers.
Also, look to a marketing group which will provide the ability to earn top commissions as a producer, but, also if you want to build an "agency type" business, you can do that also.

Bets of luck in your pursuit.
