: Is it a good business to get into for an independent agent or do you need to be captive, or are most companies cutting out the agent alltogether and writing direct?

I found the P&C exam to be slightly harder than group 1, but not by much.

I am vigorously persuing P&C, because I think that in the long term, it's better, more dependable income. My wife is getting her P&C license so that she can help with customer service. L&H has good up-front commissions, but it's a hard sell. Upside is (at least for life insurance) there is only one claim per client. P&C has lower up-front commissions, but a healthy renewal rate. Big plus is that in the P&C business, most of my clients call *ME*. Downside is that P&C requires more client handholding, and you end up being an intermediary for claims (or hire somebody to handle that part).

I am an independent. It's tough to get started as an independent; you may have to find an established agency to work through to get started.
