: What are the pros and cons of being a general agent vs being a agent working for someone?

I was "employed" in upper middle mgmt. with a large carrier when I decided to become self employed in march,2001.
Pro's
You control customer service, you dictate your own hours, you decide with which companies you want to deal with. No corporate B.S.
Cons
If you're like me you have to build you're own client base, first year I made a whopping 25K, 2nd year it was about 90K.
Depending on how much you have to get started you may be involved in all aspects of the business, computer tech,accountant,janitor,C.S.R., No company benefits as well as prospecting for and closing new clients

I often think about what's the best way to go and I haven't figured it out yet.

Good Luck, Paul
