| Locate a local agent |
1000agents.com was designed to help the frontline agent get interested, motivated prospects. Insurance shoppers still want a local agent they can sit down at an office within driving distance. Even if consumers check prices with the large quote services, they will still buy the policy from someone they know. At the same time, many insurance companies make marketing and distribution of their own products the agents problem.
We would like to help both the consumer and agent, to get quality products. If you are not an agent, I can answer any general insurance questions you may have and get you quotes from your own hometown agent. If you are in the business, I can help you if your client is moving, if you have a difficult case, or a hard to find product. email me and we can get you help.
When picking an insurance agent, find out if they (are):
Sending you an application without qualifying you. If so, how does he know you're buying the right policy?
Available during business hours
Return after hours phone calls, in the morning
Local, preferably in your home town (Laws and coverages vary from state to state).
Knowledgable about several other plans (Don't expect 30 different carriers)
Asking for the details of what you're insuring. You may qualify for one company but not another
Asking about your risk level. He may not be interested in your needs
Reviewing about your claim history or background. Something may cause a company to decline you.
Dealing in their area of expertise. Agents that try to be all things to all people, aren't
Running an application mill. Some agents only focus on volume
Comparing low and high cost plans. Some companies charge higher premiums for less coverage!
Polite and taking several minutes to give you suggestions. Not everything they do makes them money.
As retired agents, we can give you a few tips:
If you're buying auto or homeowners insurance, find out the claims paying track record of the company. Sadly, many insurers would rather pay attornies to deny claims, than their policyholders
Avoid any agent offering a life policy with "vanishing premiums"
Remember that life insurance illustrations are just projections, and always tend to better "on paper." No agent is going to give you a proposal with lousy performance, which often times happens
If buying disability insurance, consider a 90 day waiting period. Avoid any policy without "own occupation protection"
If buying health insurance, examine the "exclusions and limitations" before enrolling. If you get sick, you may be locked into a lousy plan. Also avoid most deductible plans, as they save you very little in the end
If you are shopping for a long term care plan, avoid inflation riders, and buy a larger up front benefit
Consider keeping your long term care benefits to 2 years if you are a men, and 3 years if a women
